I remember buying my friend’s PS4 for $200 6 years ago, and playing Rocket League for the first time after watching people on YouTube play it for a couple months. I didn’t even really have the money, but it looked so fun!
One day, I saw the Rocket League Championship Series. 3 man teams had competed for months for the chance to be on a grand stage in front of several cameras surrounded by a crowd full of fans and haters alike, announcers with the energy of every soccer commentator combined, and game analysts that had stats and opinions to make any statement controversial.
I was hooked. “I have to be part of this somehow,” I told myself.
I figured that with a lot of practice and some good teammates, I could make a run of my own. And practice I did. I practiced for at least an hour a day by myself and then hopped in ranked either solo or with friends for another couple hours every day like clockwork. As I got better, I made 3 friends that were about the same rank as me, and we played religiously. One day, likely after an RLCS broadcast, I proposed that we find a tournament to join to “practice” even more. It was so difficult to get them to agree. “We’re not even past champ. How is this going to make us better?” I responded saying that we would get to play against higher level opponents and that should highlight the parts of our game that are really lacking.
They were right, though. We got absolutely stomped. I think someone left early and didn’t talk to me for a week. It hurt, but I wanted to get better. I wanted to be on that stage.
Due to life reasons, I couldn’t practice the way I was before, even missing the sessions every night with my friends, now teammates. It was about a year before I was able to get back into Rocket League as seriously as I had before, but the game had changed. People were now hitting ceiling shots in Platinum. In addition to these newfound mechanics, I was not able to put the same amount of time into the game as before. No longer could I dedicate 4 hours a day to this game that I love. I had to be an adult…
But I still love the game of Rocket League. And I still want to be part of a huge production that brings together screaming fans, energetic announcers and witty analysts. So, when you join a 54K Tournament League, you’re not just joining a tournament, you’re taking the first step to be on a big stage playing the games you love while surrounded by fans and haters of your own, shoutcasted by the very best of the best.
